Introduction to the Internet
· Popups, Pop-unders, and Banners are 3 common forms of Advertisements.
· Most are harmless, others can become quite annoying and contain obscene, misleading, and/or adult nature.
Accessing the Internet
· The Address Bar contains the URL (Universal Resource Locator). This is the Address of where the site is on the Internet.
· The Shortcut Buttons are used to make browsing the Internet easier. There are 5 common buttons:
     - Back – To return to the previous page
     - Forward – To return to the page that you originally went back from.
     - Stop – To cease the loading of a page
     - Refresh – To reload a page or document
     - Home – To bring your browser back to the preset homepage.
· About 99.98% of all pages on sites have content. Sites that do not have any content will display a 404 Error page. This basically states that “Nothing is here”
· Enter into the address bar and click the green “Go” button
· Once the Google home page loads up, enter in the search field “Cooking” and click “Google Search”
· When the search results return, point the mouse to the first returned item, which is a link to Left-click on the first item to access
· When you come to a site that you find pleasant, you can come back to it over and over again by adding it to your favorites.
· Shortcut key is ctrl-d, hold the CTRL key and hit the letter D. This will automatically insert the page that you are viewing into your “My Favorites”
· You can also add a page to your favorites by clicking on “Favorites” and selecting “Add to Favorites.” Confirm that the name for the page is correct, and select Ok.
Saving web content to your drive
· To save an entire page from a website onto your computer, browse to the page. Click on the File Menu, and select “Save as…” Internet Explorer will prompt you for a location to save this page. A preferred location is in the “My Documents” folder. Once you have selected a destination, click “Save” and Internet Explorer does the rest.
· To save a Picture from a website onto your computer, find the picture that you would like to save. Right-click on the picture to bring up a submenu of items. Select from this submenu “Save picture as…” Internet Explorer will prompt you for a location to save this image. A preferred location is in the “My Pictures” folder. Once you have selected a destination and a proper name for the file, click “Save” and Internet Explorer does the rest.

Email Basics using Outlook Express
· Email is a quick and easy form of communication that uses the speed and versatility of the Internet to send messages, pictures, video, and audio from one person to another.
Accessing Email
· Outlook Express has a customizable Toolbar, which is located under the Menus. There are many buttons to utilize, from creating a new message to forwarding a message to many others.
· To create a new message, simply click the button on the toolbar that says “Write Message.”
· Be sure to fill in the “To:” “Subject:” and the Body of the email. These are the prerequisites to successfully sending an email. A brief explanation of the fields would be:
     - People listed in the To: are your primary recipient(s)
     - Cc: is an acronym for Carbon Copy. The recipients listed here receive a copy of the email.
     - Bcc: is an acronym for Blind Carbon Copy. These recipients receive a copy of the email as well, but are not listed in the original email.
     - A brief explanation of the email would be typed in the Subject: area.
     - The Body is where your email would be typed out.
· If you decide to attach anything further to the email, like a picture, sound, or video, left click on the blue paperclip. This tells Outlook Express to find the file that you would like to attach to this email.
· Once your finished typing and attaching files to your email, simply click the “Send” button. Your email will be moved to the “Outbox”, which will attempt to be sent. Once the email is sent, it will be moved from the “Outbox” to the “Sent Items” folders.
Contact Management
· Every email you send, the name and email address in the To: line will be automatically added to your address book. This allows you to send emails to that person again without having to go through the trouble of fully typing all the information.
· Individual contacts in your contact list can be edited. You can insert their phone numbers, addresses, places of business, contact numbers, multiple emails, and much more information per contact.
· You can access the Address Book while composing an email message by clicking the To: to the left of where you would manually enter your recipients information.

Opening Email
· When you receive email, your inbox will display a blue number to the right of it. This tells you how many new email messages you have received. To open an email message, locate it in the Email list and double click the left mouse button over it.
· If the email has attachments, it will tell you from the list under the “Subject:” line. You can access the attachments by right clicking over each attachment and selecting the option “Open” or “Save as…”
· Special attachments, like pictures and audio, will automatically be opened and displayed. These types of files cannot be viruses. They have only specialized data in them, no executable code.
Editing Pictures
· Some pictures might be too large to send over the Internet as an attachment. The person receiving them might have a slow connection in downloading them as compared to yours. For courtesy purposes, it is recommended that you resize the picture in height and width to allow the files to be smaller but keep their original quality.
· An application called “Paint” located in the Accessories folder of the Start Menu is a program that comes Pre-Loaded with windows. Once paint is loaded, using the File Menu, open your picture that your would like to send. Once the picture is opened, you can proceed to editing it.
· Left click on “Select All”, which is located under the Edit Menu. This will give you a border around the image to where you can resize it. Resize the picture by clicking on the edges of the picture and dragging the image so it’s smaller.
· Once you’ve decided on a smaller size for the picture, with the dotted border around the outside of the picture, select “Copy to…” from the edit menu. This will save anything in the dotted border to a file (hence, the picture, since it should still be enclosed in the dotted border.) Your new picture is now smaller in height, width, and file size.

Basic Computer Management

Uninstallation of programs
· Do not delete files and folders belonging to a program as a method of “uninstalling”. Typically, a program will have an uninstall feature or it will be listened in the add-remove option of the control panel.
· Programs might include an option in the start menu to uninstall themselves. This is an easy method, and requires little work.
· Locating the program in the “Add or Remove Programs” option in the Control Panel can also uninstall programs.
Freeing used hard disk space
· Programs write temporary information to the hard drive all the time, from installation, to execution, and during uninstall. Most of the time programs will delete the information that it creates, and other times the program does a sloppy job at cleanup.
· To cleanup your hard drive from temporary information that’s stored on your computer, simply:
     - Open up My Computer
     - Right-click on your first hard drive
     - Select Properties, and click on Disk Cleanup
· Disk cleanup removes temporary files as well as many other files that your system does not need anymore.
Desktop and Start Menu Management
· Organization is the best way to keep your computer clean of miscellaneous data, and at the same time find exactly what you’re looking for with little time.
· The desktop is customizable by right clicking on the background of your computer. There are many options to you when configuring your desktop.
· Your “My Documents” folder can be the main source of where you keep anything you create or download.
· Creating folders in folders with topics in mind will make it easier to search for important files.
· The Start Menu can be organized as well by right clicking anywhere inside of it, or on the Start Menu as well. The submenu brings many options to your fingertips.
· Windows comes with Archive Support for .ZIP files. These files contain files inside of them, and are typically compressed (or shrunk)
· To take files out of an archive, Windows comes with a wizard to help you out in extracting those files.
· To make an archive, select the files you want, right-click on one of your selected files, highlight “Send to…”, and left-click on “Compressed (zipped) Folder”

Chatting using AOL Instant Messenger
· Unless you have AOL or use Road Runner, you will have to download the AOL Instant Messenger Installation program from
· Before you install the program, AOL will take you through the registration process to setup a screen name, a password, and ask you for some personal information
· Once you’ve downloaded the file, run the installation to install AOL Instant Messenger to your computer
First Time Use
· When you first load the program, you will have to enter the information that you entered at the website before you continue on.
· Once you’ve entered you information, you can choose to:
     - Read the AOL Instant Messenger Overview
     - Add or Search for Buddies
     - Create your profile
· When you add buddies, they must have a valid screen name and use AOL Instant Messenger. If you’d like, you can add yourself.
· When you hover your mouse over one of your buddies, a box will show telling you the capabilities that your buddy has:
     - Chat is the ability to type your conversations to your buddy.
     - Talk can only happen if both you and your buddy have speakers and microphones.
     - DirectIM is a secure connection between 2 Chat Clients, which prevents eavesdroppers from understanding what you are typing.
     - Buddy Icon is a picture that your buddy has selected to represent them.
     - File Transfer means that you can send and receive files from your buddy.
     - File Sharing gives you access to your buddies files that they have selected to share with the world
Harassment Procedures
· If you come in contact with anyone on the Internet that offends you anyway or who threatens you, you may choose to “Warn” him or her. A warning level is established to understand if a particular person has been disruptive in some way or another.
· If you choose not to speak to anyone that you are not comfortable with, you may choose to block him or her. Blocking them will prevent messages from that screen name from showing up on your computer, thus ridding them of your hair.

Chatting using MSN Messenger
· Microsoft MSN Messenger comes preloaded with Microsoft Windows. If not, you can download it at
First time use
· When you first start using MSN Messenger, you will be required to setup an .NET account using the .NET Passport wizard. This process is easy and painless, and only requires an email address along with some personal information
· Once the wizard is complete, you have access to messenger services.
· MSN Messenger is a user-friendly interface, providing the task of chatting with the ease and comfort of common controls and interfaces.
What MSN has to offer?
· MSN Messenger allows you to contact friends and relatives of who have already signed on using their current email address with ease.
· Messenger also allows customization of your client, including downloadable plugins, which allow your client to operate as you see fit.
· .NET Passport allows you a single identification for use in signing in to multiple sites.
